Water Question from a first time burner

Postby spiritkas » Sun May 30, 2010 7:39 pm

G'day,

First time burner, long time water drinker!

I have started getting into the more detail oriented planning phase and I'm curious about how water works in BRC and at CSC specifically. The mainpage here for CSC says that radical self reliance is still a major part of life, even in a theme camp, but that drinking water will be provided. I am still trying to wrap my head around everything BM and this probably sounds a bit silly for the people who've been and experienced the camp before. But does that mean that I don't need to bring any or only limited water supplies? With 50 people in camp drinking and cooking and cleaning with water, that's at least 2 gallons per person per day for 7 days for 50 people or around 700 gallons of water. Is that all being trucked in by our lovely and highly estimable CSC principle coordinators? How is it stored and how do we utilize it in camp?

It is the only thing I'm sure about how radically self reliant I need to be. Also I was just curious, is the ice they sell from antartica at camp centre/6 o'clock/9 o'clock potable? It'd probably be overly expensive as a primary source for water, but does anyone know if that ice is good to drink?

Thanks so much for helping my first timer arse out!

Cheers,

Spiritkas

Water in camp... hmm...

At extreme hassle I went off-playa and hauled in 800 gallons of water - yes!
As for the question if I do it again this year..... I don`t think so.

Ice is sold ($3 per bag) - its portable / drinking quality.
(Any profit goes to local community)
Sold at the `key-holes`, 3,9 and 6 o`clock.

Last year we had a massive water bladder, such as the ones used by the forestry commission.
(It was housed in a car-port shade)

It got damaged last year and has not been repaired.... also the trailer we used is not available to us this year.
If anything changes I`ll be sure to send out a mass email, or a post in this board.

So, for now, bring your own water AND make preparations for taking away ALL of your own gray water.

Hello hello.!!.

The big bag of water from last year was great. I remember I brought to the desert 10 gals of water and I used only the half of it. BUT NOW. its going to be precious water.

you can plan your meals to NOT use much water. for example, to cook pasta you need a lot of water you cant re use for anything. just and example. Pre cook the pasta and bring it in seep lock bags, keep it cool, that can work for the first couple days. There are other meals that you could figure that dont need much water to get prepared.

Instead of cleaning dishes you could use burnables. Just store them and burned them. Last time we schedule a ride on the art car for taking recyclables to Recycle Camp

To take out gray water just and idea re-use containers.

It's good to Remember that everything that came in has to come out. I find very interesting this activity of having to clean everything after yourself ALL the time... It brings a lesson we can apply out in the rest of the world .. I love it!.

MORE about water. DRINK WATER ALL THE TIME:.. We should prepare the body for constant dehydration the more days we can before the week on the playa. By drinking enough water our body can keep the pace of energy needs, mind will me more focused... There are enough porta potties everywhere to take a piss. :D Free drinks everywhere around BRC will help too.!  and don't forget to bring your own CUP (BROC) :geek:
My all beings be full of peace, love, harmony and good will...

I am driving 2 people out but dropping them off in Reno because I enter on Sunday and they can't enter until Monday. I am bringing in water for them, Anastasia, and myself, but with 2 seats empty I should have room for extra water. Scared to offer to bring it for EVERYONE, but I can bring in some extras for our members that have EXTREME difficulty bringing in water. Like if you are hitchhiking or flying in.

The ice they sell is potable, but yes, expensive if that is your only water source. Last year a member Clirviny posted this advice:

Keep your cooler from turning into a disgusting cesspool by picking up zip-lock bags from the dollar store or grocery store. Always put your ice in the zip-lock bags so when it melts the water stays contained and you can either drink it (nice and cool) or add it to your shower water. No more mushy meats, fruit or bread.

(go back to last year's forum and read everything she posted. She had lots of great advice. Her CS Camp username was cirving.)

You could use plastic wear for eating and clean it with baby wipes. Then burn the baby wipes.

My first year I didn't cook. I ate lots of energy bars, trail mix and tuna with mustard. I hated tuna by the end of the week. But last year I felt I wasted too much time cooking and cleaning. Need to figure out a balance this year. Bring fruit that won't go bad easy. Last year we had a lot of the Indian Fares from Trader Joes cause you can just cook them in boiled water (which saves you from cleaning the pot and you can use the water for something else) but another camp member opened hers and cook it in the pot to save water. Oh and you can pick up ready-made rice at Trader Joes that cooks in the bag in boiled water.

Doesnt apply to ppl traveling from far away but I Froze 2.5 gallon water Jugs and all non carbonated beverages before the burn and filled my ice boxes with them. The ones tucked away stayed frozed/ cold throughout the burn and i always had cold drinks on hand. also since everything was packaged I didnt have a problem with dirty icebox water.
